What about conducting a regular legal checkup with a
lawyer - in much the same way as you would have an annual physical or medical
checkup with a doctor? Doing so could lead to a longer, more peaceful life.
It’s not so crazy when you really think about it. Here is why.
It’s no secret that most people avoid lawyers and
doctors like the plague, pun intended. Maybe that’s because to some extent
people just cannot avoid lawyers and doctors; there will always be times that
doctors and lawyers or both are needed during everyone’s lifetime. Personally,
I try to avoid seeing my doctors as much as possible. I only go if I must. I’m
probably not alone in that avoidance.
After all, people have regular legal needs just as
all people have medical needs during their lifetime. Most people are delivered
into this life by a doctor and most will probably also exit life under the
supervision of a doctor. Lawyers tend to follow births and deaths by helping
with wills for new parents and probate for surviving families. The question is:
What happens in between a person’s birth and death with the major events that
occur during the lifetime like marriages, divorces, starting a business,
contracts, lawsuits, traffic citations, DUIs, debts to collect or to pay,
protecting one’s family, and planning a legacy to leave to descendants? The
answer is: A lot of things happen, and attorneys can help. One can resort to
self- help, as best possible, and use up valuable time that could have been
spent enjoying life instead.
Time is the most precious resource any person has
and money is simply a product of that time. Stress can shorten a person’s life
and cause anxiety, as a result of dealing with legal issues without an
attorney. So, having a good relationship with an attorney – one that you can
call anytime – is a way to relieve stress in anyone’s life. Consulting with
that attorney regularly, when needed, just may give a person a longer, more peaceful,
and enjoyable existence.
As one lawyer said: “In the end, it's not the years in your life that
count, it's the life in your years.”
That’s a quote from the president found on your five dollar bill.
